Top Ten Christmas Tips for Happy Help in the Home
’Don't forget those who have been working in your home and helped to get you through the ups and downs of 2007’, advises Georgina Walsh founder of NannySuccess.com, an affordable web-based service which helps you to find the right nanny, au pair or housekeeper and then manage them successfully.
Research* shows that one in two households in Briton now employ people in their home. In the bustle of Christmas and hangovers of New Year, Georgina Walsh suggests putting a few of these ideas into action:
1. Remember those simple thank yous; they can tend to be forgotten in the commotion of Christmas.
2. Tell them what it is they do so well; people always like to know why they are appreciated, and they are also likely to keep doing it.
3. Dip into your pocket; a Christmas bonus will ensure goodwill into 2008.
4. Do something for them; it can cost you nothing but mean a lot, from just a cup of tea, to an uplifting note or something to make their working day or their home life easier.
5. Buy them a thoughtful Christmas present; really put your thinking cap on and get them something they will appreciate. Another bottle of bubble bath can be so disappointing.
6. Find out what they are looking forward to in the next year; take time out for a chat about things other than their work; you may be surprised by what you hear.
7. Ask them what is the one thing they would change about their job; if it is realistic, try to make it happen.
8. Send them home early; it will put a spring in their step and a smile on their face.
9. Do or buy something to make their job easier; it isn't glamorous but your nanny, au pair or cleaner may be delighted if you buy a new iron, just make sure it isn't her only Christmas present from you.
10. Make a New Year’s Resolution for each other; tell them something that you will do for them from the beginning of the year and ask them to do the same for you; it makes you think about each other’s stress points and helps to build your relationship.
’The right help in your home can be the foundation of your life. So you need to work at keeping those foundations strong’ continues Walsh ’there is so much advice about how to manage people at work, and so little about how to manage people at home. Boundaries are blurred and emotions heightened, particularly when the care of your children is involved’
’NannySuccess.com offers tailored, affordable plans to help people choose the right nanny, au pair or housekeeper and manage them well. Our aim is happy help, happy home and consequently happy you.’
