How to keep children safe on holiday
Julia Harris' tips on keeping your kids safe in the sun:
- Never leave your children unattended, even if you are just down the road
- Behave exactly as you would at home, particularly when it comes to child safety
- If you book a sitter, make sure your children meet the person before you go out so you can make sure they are comfortable with them
- Make sure local sitters speak good English so you can communicate any special requirements
- Make sure sitters have fully-charged mobile phones, and know the local code for your mobile
- Ask the hotel if they provide a baby-sitting service or can recommend a local nursery
- Children are good gauges of character - if they can't settle, don't leave them
- Finally, always trust your own judgment
Three ways to stop your tot running off:
- Show him where he can run, so he understands that running is fine, as long as it’s in the right place
- Engage him, perhaps by getting him to play 'help' you push his pram, or hold your hand by telling him you might get lost if he doesn't help you
- Turn it into a game of catch by shouting 'chase me!' before moving just a few steps in the opposite direction as he (hopefully) runs towards you
